One of Aeschylus's earliest plays, "The Suppliants" is the first tragedy in an otherwise lost tetralogy. When Aegyptus tries to arrange marriages between his 50 daughters--the Chorus of Suppliant Maidens--and the 50 sons of his brother, Danaus, the daughters flee to Argos. King Pelasgus is forced to receive the suppliants, but in doing so, he brings war upon himself and his country as Aegyptus's men are still pursuing the daughters. The suppliants are saved just before being carried back to Egypt, and are allowed to live in peace in their new home of Argos. spacer
